UNIVERSITY CENTERS:

These are large (10,000-16,000 students) research institutions. Each offers a wide variety of undergraduate programs (including honors programs with small classroom settings) leading to the bachelor’s degree, as well as professional schools and doctoral programs.

 

SUNY at Albany:

Located on a 500-acre campus in the suburbs of the capital of New York State, SUNY Albany (11,000 undergraduates) combines the resources of a research university with a personalized, innovative atmosphere. The 65 undergraduate majors prepare students for entry to law schools, medical schools, and other graduate programs, as well as business and other professions. Some of SUNY Albany’s best and most popular programs are biology, business, political science, communications, computer science, criminal justice, economics, atmospheric science, and psychology. Undergraduate admission requirements include at least 7-8 (“iyi”) high school grade point average and a “lise diplomasi.” TOEFL score should be at least 550 (213 computer-based).

SUNY at Binghamton:

Binghamton is the smallest (under 10,000 undergraduate students), but academically most selective, of the SUNY University Centers and is recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best public universities in the United States. Undergraduates can select among 65 bachelor’s degree programs in Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Management, the Watson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Decker School of Nursing, and the School of Education and Human Development. Among the top majors are management, accounting, computer science, biology and biochemistry, English, mathematics, political science, and psychology. Binghamton offers students a modern campus overlooking the Susquehanna River Valley and includes a 190-acre nature preserve used for teaching as well as recreation.  Applicants should have a secondary school GPA of “B” or better, as well as a TOEFL score of 550 (213 computer) or SAT verbal score of 450.

SUNY at Stony Brook:

Recognized as one of the top three public research universities in the United States, SUNY Stony Brook (12,000 undergraduates) is one of only ten universities honored by the National Science Foundation for academic vision and leadership, including the integration of research and education at the undergraduate level. The Carnegie Foundation has designated Stony Brook a Research I Institution (one of only 70 such institutions in the United States). With one of the top 15 teaching hospitals in the United States, Stony Brook is an outstanding campus for pre-medical and bioengineering undergraduates. Academic programs include a full range of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business management, engineering, applied sciences, and health sciences. The university library is one of the largest in the nation.

STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGES:

These are medium-sized campuses (3,500-9,200 students) offering liberal arts and pre-professional undergraduate programs (including honors programs), as well as master’s degree programs. Classes are small and are taught by faculty members (not graduate students). Most campuses are in smaller cities and towns.


SUNY College at Brockport:

Located only 16 miles from Rochester and 60 miles from Buffalo, the village of Brockport offers students a small-town atmosphere as well as proximity to a major urban area. SUNY Brockport (6,500 undergraduates) is particularly strong in business administration and offers internship possibilities with nearby companies such as Eastman Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb.  Other strong programs include communications, criminal justice, English, health sciences, physical education, and psychology. Brockport won SUNY’s number one ranking for access to technology and for quality of dining services. Applicants need a “B” average (70%, or 5 on 10-point scale) GPA and a TOEFL score of 530 (197 computer). SAT NOT REQUIRED, BUT SCORES ARE USED TO DETERMINE ELIGIBILITY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS RANGING FROM $2,000-9,800 PER YEAR.

SUNY College at Buffalo:

The largest arts and sciences college in the SUNY system, Buffalo State (9,200 undergraduates) offers bachelor’s degrees in 71 major fields. Among the most important programs are: business studies, computer information systems, design, communication, economics, journalism, industrial technology, fashion and textile technology, criminal justice, and economics.  Located in the city of Buffalo, the 115-acre campus offers many open, green spaces and a safe environment. Minimum scores required for international students are: GPA of 80 (on 100-point scale) and either TOEFL score of 500 (173 computer) or combined SAT of 980.  INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AT BUFFALO STATE ARE ELIGIBLE FOR FREE HOUSING.

SUNY College at Cortland:

Located in the geographic center of New York State, Cortland is an historic town surrounded by rolling hills, lakes, and ski areas. SUNY Cortland (5,600 undergraduates) has outstanding programs in environmental science and outdoor education, as well as in biology, communication studies, computer mapping, engineering, human services, political science, psychology, and sociology. One of the most beautiful SUNY campuses, Cortland also offers 34 computer centers for student use, 62 laboratories and classrooms for the natural sciences, a planetarium, and a fine arts center with gallery. International students need a TOEFL score of 550 (213 computer) and an English proficiency report. THERE ARE A FEWRESIDENTIAL SERVICES SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE (APPROXIMATELY $1500).

SUNY College at Fredonia:

One of SUNY’s smaller colleges (4,750 undergraduates), Fredonia is located in a 19th-century village about 60 minutes’ drive from Niagara Falls. Fredonia offers 60 undergraduate programs in liberal arts and sciences, fine and performing arts, teacher education, accounting and business, and health care. Particularly outstanding are the programs in music (seven degree options), media arts, computer science, business administration, and biology (four degree options, including recombinant gene technology).

SUNY College at Geneseo:
One of SUNY's most selective campuses, Geneseo (4,900 undergraduates) is particularly strong in management, political science, international relations, communications, biochemistry, and economics. Located in an historic village in the Finger Lakes region of western New York, not far from Rochester. No application fee for on-line applications.  Admission requirements: Grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 (on 5-point scale), 8 (on 10-point), or 80 (on 100-point). TOEFL score should be at least 525 (197 computer); TOEFL not required for graduates of English-medium private high schools in Turkey.  SAT not required, but a math score of 550 will facilitate admission to some departments. OUTSTANDING INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR A $2000 SCHOLARSHIP.

SUNY College at New Paltz:
Noted for its excellent business school, SUNY New Paltz (5,000 undergraduates) is also very strong in electrical and computer engineering. The fine arts program is highly respected, particular for metalwork and ceramics. Facilities for science (chemistry and physics) are outstanding. Located in a lovely historic town just 90 minutes from New York City, New Paltz was named one of America’s 20 safest campuses. Applicants should have the equivalent of a “B” average.  TOEFL of 550 is needed, but students with scores of 460-549 may begin their academic program while attending ESL classes.  SAT not required.

SUNY College at Old Westbury:
Particularly strong in computer science, communications, business, and accounting, Old Westbury (3,600 undergraduates) is also outstanding in natural sciences, with unusual research opportunities for undergraduates. The campus is located on Long Island on 605 acres of meadows and woodlands, but just 20 miles from Manhattan. Old Westbury has an unusually high percentage of distinguished professors. Requires high school "B" average and 500 (175 computer) TOEFL. SAT not required.

SUNY College at Oneonta:
Oneonta (5,000 undergraduates) offers strong programs in business economics, computer science and mathematics, human ecology, communication, earth and physical sciences, and music industry.  Of particular interest is a joint business program with SUNY Binghamton  (3-year B.A. from Oneonta; 2-year MBA from Binghamton).  Oneonta has one of SUNY’s highest rankings for quality of teaching staff and level of campus safety. The campus is located in the scenic Susquehanna River Valley (south central New York) near the national baseball and soccer halls of fame. Requires high school GPA of C (60 or more) and either 500 (173 computer) TOEFL or 1000 combined SAT.

SUNY College at Oswego:

Ranked in the top 15% in Barron’s Guide, named one of U.S. News and World Report’s “top ten regional values,” and listed among Kiplinger’s national list of top 100 public colleges and universities, SUNY Oswego (6,800 undergraduates) is a comprehensive college with a strong liberal arts reputation. Career-oriented programs are offered through the schools of business and education, and through arts and sciences programs such as chemistry, communications, economics, computer science, graphic arts, and psychology. Some of Oswego’s unique programs include meteorology, zoology, technology management, and cognitive science. The spacious campus along the shore of Lake Ontario is a 45-minute drive from Syracuse. Admission requirements include a TOEFL score of 550 (213 computer) and high school GPA of at least “orta” (5-6); International Baccalaureate diploma students should have a grade of 4 or better for advanced standing. APPLICANTS MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR A RESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP OF $3,640 PER YEAR. OSWEGO ALSO OFFERS A LIMITED NUMBER OF MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS TO ACADEMICALLY QUALIFIED STUDENTS.

SUNY College at Plattsburgh:

Located just 20 miles from the Canadian border in the beautiful Champlain Valley, SUNY Plattsburgh (5,400 undergraduates) is in the middle of a small city on the shore of Lake Champlain. With its strong liberal arts and community service tradition, as well as its practical orientation, Plattsburgh prepares students for successful professional lives and boasts a 96% job placement rate for its graduates. Among the most popular programs are business and accounting, biology, chemistry, environmental science, hotel and restaurant management, journalism and broadcasting, nursing, and psychology. Applicants should have a TOEFL score of 550 (213 computer) or equivalent, but Plattsburgh’s ESL program is available to those with scores from 450-549. Students may satisfy the TOEFL requirement with a 480 verbal SAT score.

SUNY College at Potsdam:
SUNY Potsdam (3,600 undergraduates) offers one of the top five mathematics programs in the U.S. and is also exceptionally strong in music, business administration (a unique major at Potsdam is "the business of music"), computer and information science, economics, engineering (in a cooperative program with SUNY Binghamton), archeological studies, and criminal justice. U.S. News and World Report calls Potsdam one of the best buys in U.S. education (high quality, low cost).  Entrance requirements:  Secondary school grade point average of at least 3.5 (5-point scale), 8 (10-point scale), or 80 (100-point scale). SAT: 480 verbal and 480 math or ACT composite score of at least 20. TOEFL score should be 520 or higher. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WITH TOEFL SCORE OF 550 OR HIGHER CAN QUALIFY FOR FREE ROOM AND BOARD (A SAVINGS OF $6390).
